Giant B Crashes 500 Feet!

Look out 'B'-low! A 300-pound, seven-foot tall letter B fell 500 feet from a building in Pittsburgh. I love the 'P' in this photo, that seems to be pointing at the wreckage and gloating. But of course the big question is what typeface was it? You heard it here first: it was a Eurostile Extended upper case B, that fell from the Ariba wordmark.

An uppercase B fell, you say? That's very suspicious, seeing as a B does not normally have a 'descender'. And of course that snarky Futura P is gloating... those 'extra bold' fonts think they know everything.

You might say they need to 'anchor' their type.

I've heard of crash numbering before, but not crash lettering. Here's another suggestion... if their type keeps crashing, they should simply loosen up the tracking a bit more. Problem solved.

That's one hell of a drop cap...

I would guess that the photo is looking at the ascender side of the B, one of the counters having been torn open?

I think the P is gloating that the B is now turned into a fellow P.

Wouldn't that look great hanging on a studio wall. Very interesting forms.

What I wouldn't give to have a picture of the next 'B' being put into place, next to the 'A', by a crane for Be A Design Group's ever-developing "BA" logo. Ok, so I don't have much to give, but we would give the appropriate photography credit. The more BA photos the better.

This is the kind of news to be highlighted for a typography enthusiast.
The logo from my blog (bala) also squashed. But perhaps is in a better shape than this from Ariba.

And we have finally established the fact that Eurostile is an incredibly unstable and dangerous font to use.

Though I still love < href="http://www.veer.com/products/typedetail.aspx?image=ADT0003241">Eurostile Extended. Nyah! That font is da bomb. Clearly. ;)
